The Vault: The Old Coastguard Pop Up

Small plates, cocktails and modern decor at The Vault Kitchen in Penzance. The Old Coastguard’s pop-up restaurant located in The Vault is the perfect place Christmas nibbles and socialising!

The Vault Penzance

The Old Coastguard sadly temporarily closed its doors last year after it was damaged in a fire last June. Fortunately, the team and head chef, Jamie Porter, decided to move into The Vault for the duration of the Mousehole restaurant’s reconstruction. Eat Drink Sleep own The Old Coastguard, The Felin Fach Griffin in Brecon and The Gurnards Head in Zennor.

The Vault, Penzance

The Vault is absolutely beautiful; with high ceilings and modern decor blends, it most certainly made an impact. You’ll find The Vault at the north end of Chapel Street. I’d definitely recommend a mooch along this street considering it’s the oldest in Penzance - it’s home to a number of quirky independent shops and an eclectic mix of buildings (surely you’ve seen the Egyptian building?!)

The Vault

The Vault recently launched their new cocktail menu so we were excited to try them out! I went for the Darling Clementine and Anna chose the Ginger Snap. Both cocktails were created with Christmas flavours in mind. Delicious!

The Vault food menu is split between appetisers and small plates. Anna and I decided to go for a few appetisers and four small plates to share so we could try out several different dishes. After a long discussion, we decided to go for the whitebait, mussels (with an Asian twang), ham + squid, sashimi from Newlyn market and triple cooked chips. The small plates range between £6 - £8. I decided to try an oyster from their appetiser menu. I can confirm that oysters are not easy to eat!

For dessert, we decided to go for the cinnamon doughnuts from the specials board. By this point I was pretty full but managed to eat a couple of doughnuts. We wrapped the other doughnuts to take home. They were so fluffy and tasty!

The Vault is a lovely place for wine/cocktails alongside small plates and nibbles. The pop-up won’t be sticking around for too long as the team will be moving back to their original restaurant (The Old Coastguard located in Mousehole) in early 2020.
